How to ease asthma symptoms?

Asthma is often triggered or aggravated by poor air quality, whether it's outdoors or indoors. In this context, using an air purifier can be very beneficial for people with asthma by providing them with a healthier environment and helping to relieve their symptoms. An air purifier can also help asthmatics to have more restful nights, which can have a positive impact on their health and overall well-being.

Air pollution and asthma

Research has linked air pollution to a number of health concerns, including asthma.

According to a US White House report for June 2014, more than 8% of Americans are living with asthma, including more than 9% of children. In fact, asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalizations for children in the US.
The relationship between asthma and air pollution has been studied and quantified by epidemiologic and toxicologic research works during the last decade. There is consistent evidence that living near traffic sources is associated with asthma occurrence and exacerbation:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18043269,
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2920902/

What are the triggers of asthma?

Studies have shown that the level of hospitalizations for asthma increases when levels of particulate matter in the air rise. For example, an epidemiological study for the city of Phoenix (US, Arizona)  quantified a 13% increase in asthma risk among children ages 5-13,  for a PM10 daily mean increase of 36 µg/m3 (https://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/12/2479/2012/acp-12-2479-2012.pdf).  This is to be compared with the recommended maximum PM10 daily exposure by the World Health Organization: 50 µg/m3 - a value which is often exceeded in many urban areas around the globe.

Ozone induces an inflammation of the cells in the airways, and increased airways reactivity to stimuli (mites, pollens, molds, etc.). In the US, several studies have monitored the asthma medication of a cohort of children, and measured the association with ozone level. Other have associated hospital visits with ozone level. The validity of these epidemiological analysis is confirmed by experimentations in controlled environments: ozone has an exacerbating effect on asthma.

Ozone is a powerful oxydant, very toxic even at small concentrations. Significant pulmonary function reduction have been observed on athletes exposed to as low as 0.2 ppm concentration, for as short a duration as 1 hour. Ozone can cause damages to lungs, loins, the brain and the eyes. Several scientific works even consider that ozone can be toxic from the first molecule, which means that there is no threshold under which anyone can be safe. Since a few years, international standards forbid to sell air purifier products generating more than 50 ppb (0.05 ppm) of ozone.

how to reduce asthma symptoms with TEQOYA air purifiers

How to reduce air pollution?

Fifty years ago, a French scientist, Professor Jean Bricard, awarded by the French Academy of Sciences, and called the Father of Aerosol Science in France,  established a law correlating aerosols (particles)  density in the atmosphere with negative ions density in the same air. The more negative ions, the fewer particles in the air.
Since then, engineers have tried to develop ways to generate negative ions in the air, as a way to purify it.  Several scientific studies have quantified the impact of negative ions on indoor air purification. You will find some of them on Teqoya website: https://www.teqoya.com/research-review-health-benefits-of-negative-ions/.
Physical mechanisms explaining the action of negative air ions on aerosols (particles in the air) are now well-known, and air ionization can be used as an efficient solution for air cleaning. You can have a look to https://www.teqoya.com/ionisation-negative-ions/ for explanations.

How to also reduce allergens?

Asthma can  increase the reactivity of airways to allergens, which means that these allergens will trigger asthma crises. Main indoor air allergens are mites, pollen, told spores. Negative ions act on them as on any other particles.  Thus, cleaning particles means doing so as well with such allergens.
In addition, there are evidences of virus and bacteria having an exacerbating impact on asthma: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1398-9995.2010.02505.x/full. Negative oxygen ions have been shown to have a bactericidal effect - you will find case studies on Teqoya website: https://www.teqoya.com/research-review-health-benefits-of-negative-ions/. Oxygen ions O2- are the main ions generated by an air ionizer. Some viruses  and bacteria having an impact on respiratory function, may be killed or neutralized by oxygen ions.

Finally, negative oxygen ions have a biological action that improves the oxygen uptake by the body.

It has been reported by biological studies that the oxygen intake  by the cells increases when the air  is charged with negative oxygen ions. However, we must indicate that, up to now, such studies have been run mainly with animal cells. You will find an example here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FBF01553139. However, physiological quantitative tests on men have been performed, confirming that negative air ions are biologically active: http://europepmc.org/abstract/MED/8064146.
This improved oxygenation of the blood may help compensate some of the asthma symptoms and, as such, be a relief to asthma-stricken children, and adults.

Reduce asthma symptoms with air purifiers

Teqoya ionizers do not produce ozone, thus solving the main drawback of ionizers as air purifiers, and enabling their usage by people suffering from asthma.

Ozone, as we saw above, is a very active oxidant. Exposure to ozone must absolutely be avoided, even in the smallest quantities. Ionizers have regularly been reported to generate ozone. It is true that generating a high quantity of negative ions (which is key to acting as a powerful air purifier) often goes with generating ozone. This is where Teqoya ionizers make a lot of difference with other ionizers: THE DO NOT GENERATE OZONE, even in the smallest  measurable quantities.
Teqoya ionizers have been tested in independent laboratories  with scientific metrology: no ozone was detected, even as close as 1cm to the tips (which are the ions  emission points). Look at https://www.teqoya.com/teqoya-air-purifiers-efficiency-tested-in-labs/ for details.

Finally, negative ions' beneficial effects  on asthma have been reported by some quantitative medical studies.

You will find examples of such studies on Teqoya website at : https://www.teqoya.com/research-review-health-benefits-of-negative-ions/.

3 key features of TEQOYA air purifiers

  1. Efficiently reduce particles and allergens in the air, which are known as  asthma triggers;
  2. Do not emit ozone, even in the slightest quantity, thus avoiding damaging the body airways (and to exacerbate asthma);
  3. Diffuse a high quantity of oxygen ions in the air, which can help improve respiratory system efficiency.
