Asthma and Negative Ions: A Natural Solution

Negative ions purify the air by neutralizing allergens that trigger asthma attacks. Unlike inhalers, which treat emergencies, negative ions offer continuous prevention. Particularly effective for allergic asthma and asthma related to indoor pollution.

For many, asthma is a constant vigilance. You anticipate attacks, keep the inhaler within reach, and learn to recognize warning signs. What is less known is that the majority of attacks originate from the air we breathe at home. Dust mites in bedding, mold in damp areas, infiltrated pollen, fine particles from outside: all of this accumulates where we should be best protected.

However, there is a way to act upstream, not on the attack itself, but on what triggers it. Negative ions, naturally present in certain environments, offer a continuous and hassle-free solution to reduce the allergenic load of indoor air.

Asthma and Indoor Pollution: The Often Overlooked Link

Why Indoor Air Worsens Asthma

We spend between 80 and 90% of our time indoors, in air that is on average five to seven times more laden with pollutants than outdoor air. The main indoor asthma triggers are well known: dust mites in bedding, carpets, and furniture; mold in damp rooms; pollen that seeps through windows; pet hair; fine particles and volatile organic compounds from everyday materials and products.

Allergen Source Indoor Concentration
Dust Mite Bedding, carpet, furniture 10-100 per gram of dust
Mold Bathroom, kitchen, basement 1,000-10,000 spores/m³
Pollen Open windows, clothing Variable (season)
Pet Hair Pets Variable
Fine Particles (PM2.5) Outdoor, indoor pollution 20-100 µg/m³
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) Paint, furniture, household products 100-500 µg/m³

Numerous sources show that indoor allergens play a major role in triggering asthma attacks.

Symptoms are often more pronounced at night or upon waking, due to prolonged exposure to dust mites present in bedding and room dust. Excessive indoor humidity further promotes the development of mold and dust mites, which can worsen the frequency and intensity of attacks.

Improving indoor air quality and limiting humidity are therefore essential levers to reduce the risk of decompensation in asthmatic individuals.

Mechanism: How Negative Ions Reduce Asthma Attacks

Negative ions attach to airborne particles (dust mites, mold spores, pollen, dust), electrically charge them, and precipitate them to the ground, limiting exposure to allergic triggers. By reducing the concentration of airborne pollutants and allergens, negative ions help create a healthier indoor environment.

Some observational studies suggest that negative ionization indirectly reduces the irritability of the airways in sensitive individuals. Moreover, preliminary research indicates that inhaling air charged with negative ions could be associated, in some asthmatics, with better respiratory tolerance and a decreased need for relief medication.

Air Ionizer and Inhaler: Two Complementary Roles

The inhaler and TEQOYA air ionizer do not operate at the same time. One acts urgently, opening the airways during a crisis, in a few minutes. The other acts upstream, continuously reducing triggers over several weeks.

Aspect TEQOYA Air Ionizer Inhaler
Type Prevention Emergency treatment
Function Purifies air, reduces triggers Opens airways during a crisis
Usage Continuous (24/7) On demand (during a crisis)
Action time 2-3 weeks 5-15 minutes
Effect Reduces the number of crises Stops an ongoing crisis
Dependency No Possible if overused

Fewer crises mean mechanically less reliance on the inhaler. The two approaches reinforce each other.

Testimonials

I used to have asthma problems. But since we installed the ionizer, I have much less trouble breathing. I used to need to take regular medication, but now it's over.

Malo Guyon-Alsat

I have asthma problems and chronic sinusitis that prevented me from sleeping well at night... Blocked nose, difficulty breathing. Since I installed the TEQOYA T200 on my bedside table, I find that I can sleep through the night. Not that all my health issues are completely resolved, but there is a real improvement. I am very happy with this device and wouldn't hesitate to take it with me when I sleep away from home because it is very compact, lightweight, and easily fits into a suitcase.

Karima Layeb

For a few years, I have been suffering from asthma. Your concept convinced me, so I bought a TEQOYA and placed it in our bedroom. Overnight: no more attacks! I've only had one since, but in the car. Since then, I bought two more, one in the living room and another in my office at work. I am quite optimistic; in my opinion, in a few months, my asthma will have completely disappeared.

How to use the TEQOYA air ionizer for asthma

Optimal placement

The bedroom is the priority: it is where you spend the most time and where dust mites are most present. The TEQOYA T200 air ionizer should be placed 1 to 2 meters from the bed, operating throughout the night. The living room comes next, with the device placed in the center of the room during occupied hours. In the office, it is placed on the desk, near the activity area.

Duration of use

Ideally, it should be used continuously, 24/7. At a minimum, 8 to 10 hours per night is enough to achieve the main effects. The energy consumption is very low (0.5 W), and the cost is negligible (less than €10 per year).

Combination with other measures

To maximize results, the TEQOYA air ionizer should be combined with daily airing for 10 minutes, vacuuming once or twice a week, washing sheets and pillowcases at 60 °C each week, maintaining humidity between 40 and 50%, using dust mite covers on the mattress and pillow, and continuing prescribed medical treatment.

FAQ

Can negative ions replace my inhaler?

No. Negative ions act preventively by reducing triggers. The inhaler remains essential for treating an ongoing crisis. Continue your medical treatment and consult your doctor before any changes.

How long before seeing results?

The first effects usually appear after 3 to 7 days. Maximum effectiveness is reached after 2 to 3 weeks of continuous use.

Do I need one ionizer per room?

Ideally yes, but start with the bedroom. You can gradually expand according to your needs.

Are negative ions dangerous for asthma?

No, they are beneficial. However, it is advisable to avoid models that produce ozone, a pollutant that can worsen respiratory symptoms.

What is the cost of an ionizer?

Between 200 € and 800 € depending on the model. The annual cost is almost zero, with no filter to replace.
